ARTIST TALK Matter: The Fundamental Principles

Matter: The Fundamental Particles
Presented in partnership with Art at CMS and CERN

ARTIST TALK Wednesday, May 20 | 7pm
On view through May 31, 2015

Miami-based artist and ArtCenter alumnus Xavier Cortada and Pete Markowitz, professor of physics at Florida International University in conversation about their collaboration at Art@CMS. The talk will be moderated by Dr. Jorge Pérez Gallego, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science.

For this CMS exhibition, works were selected from artist/scientist collaborations as well as video artists who were invited to create pieces inspired by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. The CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, at CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics that sits astride the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. CERN is one of the world’s largest and most respected centers for scientific research. It operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world where physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter—the fundamental particles—that provide insights into the fundamental laws of nature. CMS is designed to measure the properties of previously discovered particles with unprecedented precision, and be on the lookout for completely new, unpredicted phenomena.

About the film:
Julian Marty (Dan Hedaya), who owns a Texas bar, suspects his wife Abby (Frances McDormand) is having an affair with one of his bartenders, Ray (John Getz). Marty hires private detective Loren Visser (M. Emmet Walsh) to take photos of Ray and Abby in bed at a local motel. The morning after their tryst, Marty makes a menacing phone call to them, making it clear he is aware of their relationship.

The following day, Ray confronts Marty and quits his job. Marty threatens Ray’s life and advises him to not trust Abby. Marty then hires Visser to kill the couple while he takes a fishing trip to Corpus Christi to establish an alibi. Visser breaks into Ray’s home, steals Abby’s gun, and photographs the sleeping couple through the bedroom window. Later, he presents doctored photos of their corpses to Marty when collecting his $10,000 fee. He then shoots Marty with Abby’s gun in a double cross, leaving the gun at the scene to frame Abby for Marty’s murder.

Foundations, Parameters and Volumes | Babette Herschberger

With a focus on minimal composition, process, surface and color, Herschberger’s paintings transform the banality of the original materials into subtle intersections of plane and form. This new series of paintings begins with collaged paper as its foundation and she uses them as studies or sketches for larger works. This work aims in every way to become a graphic distillation of her longstanding painting practice and a body of collage work created from informal materials including product packaging and cardboard.

Herschberger’s work has been in exhibitions at The Fort Lauderdale Museum of Art, the Florida Gulf Coast University Gallery, the Hollywood Art and Cultural Center Biennial, among others. Recently, her work was selected by Rene Morales, curator at the Perez Art Museum Miami to be included in the publication New American Paintings and she exhibited at Scope Miami Art Fair with Miami Independent Thinkers. She is an alumni of ArtCenter/South Florida and is represented by Cheryl Hazan Contemporary Art in New York.
