Vizcaya Museum and Gardens’ Contemporary Arts Program (CAP) commissions artists to develop site-specific work inspired by Vizcaya, the winter residence of James Deering (1859–1925), that was built between 1914 and 1922 in the Coconut Grove area of Miami. The estate, conceived as a modern and subtropical interpretation of an eighteenth-century Italian villa, was entirely surrounded by subtropical forest—the Main House and the formal gardens appeared as a dreamlike vision in the midst of the jungle on the shores of Biscayne Bay. Today, Vizcaya is an oasis of silence and green, miraculously preserved just south of Miami’s modern skyline.

The CAP program, initiated in 2006, draws on the spirit of creative dialogue that characterized Vizcaya’s founding. Deering was a patron of contemporary artists of his day and commissioned figures like Gaston Lachaise and A. Stirling Calder for site-specific work. CAP provides visitors with new ways of seeing the historic estate, and strengthens relations with contemporary artists. Projects have ranged from long-term installations by individual artists to one-night-only programs featuring the work of several artists. All CAP projects explore themes related to Vizcaya, using the site as a point of departure. Vizcaya on the Beach highlights the historic precedent of CAP by exhibiting the work of Gaston Lachaise alongside recently commissioned works by Dona Altemus (2015), Maritza Molina (2015) and Ernesto Oroza (2011).

Gaston Lachaise
Lachaise’s work was among the more avant-garde commissions by Vizcaya’s founder James Deering. Lachaise was a Frenchmen but was naturalized through marriage. He worked very closely with Paul Manship on the designs for Rockefeller Center and his work can be seen throughout the plaza. He is best known for his gravity defiant figurative work which prompted E.E. Cummings to liken Lachaise to sculpture as Cezanne is to painting. He also exhibited several works in the 1913 Armory Show. Lachaise created a pair of peacocks out of plaster in his New York City studio and then shipped the models down to Vizcaya, where artisans did a rough cut in native coral stone. Lachaise came onsite to do the final touches in 1921. The peacocks (currently deinstalled and in storage at Vizcaya) once marked the site where guests would transition from the old world formal gardens to the new world lagoon gardens.

Ernesto Oroza | Archetype Vizcaya
Oroza’s work focuses on design and architecture. The notion of archetype—the original pattern or model on which all similar things are based—is central to his investigation of material culture. As part of his installation, Oroza inserted silhouettes of the invasive plants that endanger Miami’s local vegetation on plexiglass panels in the Main House, challenging visitors to question what is original and authentic at a place like Vizcaya. In this exhibition, Oroza installs the silhouettes in a similar fashion on the glass of the vitrine. He also installs a “wallpaper” using images of the extravagant marble floors that served as an organizing principle in another portion of his original project.

Maritza Molina | Sparkling Vision
Inspired by Vizcaya owner James Deering’s spirit of creation, Sparkling Vision reflects the interplay between the real and the imagined. Molina’s performance was part of Fantastical Vizcaya in December 2015 and activated Vizcaya through whimsical forms and playful intervention, alluding to a vision of fantasy and dreams as the magic of Vizcaya materialized. The performance/installation conveyed an ethereal dreamlike state connected to Molina’s personal interpretation for her ideal Vizcaya, a place where everything sparkles of gold, a state she imagines may have been characteristic of Deering’s vision in the years leading up to Vizcaya’s creation. Remnants from the resulting installation are exhibited here.

Dona Altemus | Southeastern Quadrant
Southeastern Quadrant was a participatory collaboration that, in the week preceding Fantastical Vizcaya, engaged Vizcaya visitors as co-creators in constructing a large-scale textile work assembled in the public realm. Museum visitors selected historic archival images, which they transferred onto fabric under the artist’s guidance. Altemus stitched these individual fabric components together using quilting techniques. The result is a large-scale architectural collage that references the many minds and voices that participated in the manifestation of Vizcaya.

Enxuto and Love’s institutionally focused work forms the basis of Beacons. The exhibition builds upon their interest in the role technology plays in mediating the power dynamics between institutions and their publics. The beacons used in this exhibition—small wireless sensors that can be attached to objects to produce data on their movement—are a “smart” technology that allows for user interactivity to be monitored within the gallery space. This technology has recently been employed in commercial venues and museums as a way to monitor interest in products and/or artworks and, like data collected from any system, it retains institutional biases despite their precise recordings. In this environment, Beacons becomes an interactive system that illuminates, tracks, and predicts movement, where the user experience is an interrogation of what contemporary art can provide for cities and their communities.

O Cinema Wynwood & ArtCenter/South Florida invite you to the closing reception of “Traveling to Cuba?”, an exhibition by Rosa Naday Garmendia.

Starting at 11:30am, guests will enjoy a light brunch of baked goods, fruit and mimosas. Then at 12:00pm, guests will be invited into the auditorium for the screening of “Viva Cuba” by director Juan Carlos Cremata.

Set in the 1990s, this road movie of a girl and a boy who travel from Havana to the easternmost tip of Cuba is an ode to friendship and the simple daily experiences that conform the meaning of homeland, as well as a call for respecting children’s needs, concerns and contradictions, so often overlooked by adults. The film’s many awards and recognitions are justified not only for the amazing performance of its two young lead actors but for its message of humanism. Some awards include: Grand Prix Ecrans Juniors, Cannes, 2005; Best Film, International Children’s Film Festival, L’Aisne, France, 2006; Best Film, Wurzburg International Film Festival, Germany, 2006; Best Film, Internationale Kinder Film Festival, Bremen and Hannover, Germany, 2006.

“Traveling to Cuba?”

Through the use of postcards, “Traveling to Cuba?” documents the natural human communication and exchange that is increasing between people who live in the United States and Cuba. On December 17, 2014, President Obama’s order to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba encouraged more contact which greatly expanded travel opportunities for Cuba bound visitors. For the last year and a half, Garmendia has invited travelers throughout Miami to participate in this project by asking them to mail from Cuba a postcard that she designed (Cuban postage included); this can take anywhere from 3 to 18 weeks. To date, Garmendia has distributed over 1,000 postcards and has received 152 in the mail.

ArtCenter Instructor Lazaro Amaral will be doing a silkscreen printmaking demonstration at Blick Art Materials. Students from ArtCenter’s ARTech Teen program (a partnership with Miami Beach Senior High) will be on hand to assist Blick shoppers in the making of colorful silk-screened tote bags.

This event is free and correlates with Blick’s printmaking supply sale. Blick Art Supply is a sponsor of ArtCenter/South Florida’s ARTech program.

In contemporary times, violence is prevalent in our daily lives in the media, television programs, movies and video games. We see war-torn scenes in Afghanistan, stabbings in Israel and state brutality in Venezuela on the news every day. Children grow up playing with toy guns and shooting in video games. Violent scenes are commonplace and it seems as if we have become immune to it…until it hits home.

The Future Isn’t What It Used To Be, curated by Susan Caraballo, examines violence and man-made atrocities in general and reflects how the future before us looks bleak and far from what we envisioned the 21st century to be. Without explicit and violent scenes, the works in the exhibition challenge the viewer to think about the violence that we humans have triggered and continue to inflict in this world.

On Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at 7 p.m., the ArtCenter/South Florida, (924 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach), in conjunction with Books and Books, will present first-time novelist Beatricia Sagar, who will read from her debut offering, Nico’s Guide to Foreplay.

Nico’s Guide to Foreplay, published by UANDWE Press, offers a compelling look into the lives of two young men whose perspective of and approach to sex, love and money is most assuredly a study in contrast. Yet when they meet as students at Wharton, the two forge an immediate and enduring bond that is tested repeatedly as each man searches for his own identity.

Beatricia Sagar is an established contemporary abstract painter whose work reflects the ever-changing cultural milieu of Manhattan, where she lived for many years before relocating her studio to South Beach in 1998. She has been actively involved in writing poetry for several decades, even producing “Pin Up Pop Up Poetry” in conjunction with O’ Miami and winning first place at the New Hope Art Center (PA) poetry slam in 2015. www.BeatriciaSagar.com

Alexandra Kuechenberg is an interdisciplinary artist, producer and creative technologist collaboratively developing innovations in responsive media and experience design.

As an artist, Kuechenberg’s work is often an elegant fusion of intellect, satire, and technical know-how. Despite being undeniably playful there remains to be a disquieting element – a sense that the control we think we have over objects and impulses could at any moment slip from our hands; that the world could change, twist, and in an instant devour all semblance of normality in itself.

From 2006-2012 Kuechenberg led the design and development of numerous artworks for renowned light and space artist James Turrell. As a producer and creative director, she has delivered high profile experiential marketing activations and campaigns for global companies like Wired Magazine, The Guggenheim Museum, Vice Magazine and Intel.

In 2012 she founded the creative studio TO:SEE, a Miami based research and design practice. TO:SEE’s mission is to facilitate collaborative development of non-invasive technologies that facilitate authentic interpersonal and environmental connection.

Since 2013, she has been building programs, exhibits and experiences for Miami’s new Frost Science Museum, set to open summer 2016.

Kuechenberg holds an M.P.S. from NYU’s Interactive Technology Program, and a B.F.A. in New Media from Bennington College.

Monica McGivern

Monica McGivern is a multi-media artist best known for her still photography documentation of contemporary art culture, urban development, and underground music in South Florida.

Her practice explores the role of photography, both analog and digital, in a contemporary society as art object, and witness.

McGivern studied editorial photography at the Art Institute of Ft Lauderdale, and established her career photographing for publications such as The Palm Beach Daily News, The Miami Herald, Miami New Times, OOR Muzikant Magazine (Netherlands,) and NEWCITY (Chicago.)

She has exhibited in group shows at the Bass Museum of Contemporary Art, Locust Projects, The Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, had work projected in Times Square, The Sony World Photography Awards in Cannes, France with Saatchi Gallery, and broadcasted on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

In 2015 she was voted “Best Visual Artist” by readers of the Broward Palm Beach New Times, Voice Media Group, and selected by ADOBE as one of Miami’s top 15 photographers to participate in the inaugural Adobe Creative Cloud #MiamiPhotoJam.

Looking forward, Monica is excited to present a ten year archive of the South Florida music scene for discussion and dissemination, and continue experimentations to define photography’s role in preserving a cultural heritage through direct collaboration with musicians, artists, gallerists, collectors, and museums.

McGivern is influenced by the civil disobedient, Henry David Thoreau, the visual light poetry and philosophies of Ernst Haas, and stage antics of Iggy Pop.

Javier Castro was born in Havana, in 1984. He graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) and the Universidad Cristóbal Colón in Mexico. He participated in the Catedra Arte de Conducta between 2004 and 2006. Castro’s videos are guided by an anthropological gaze. He trains his camera on scenes that take place in marginal areas of Havana, as a way to understand the modes of survival that organize social life and how these are manifested in language, sexuality, violence, improvisation, and other behaviors. Aiming to allow the camera to become a “natural” element in the environment which it captures, Castro works with natural lightning and refuses to employ high end equipment. He captures individuals as they go about their daily lives and interact with their surroundings and neighbors. Castro has exhibited his work in Cuba, Mexico, Bolivia, Argentina, Austria, Italy, Spain, England, Belgium, and the United States, among other places. His work can be found in the collections of Daros-Latinoamerica, Mediatica Caixa Forum, and the National Museum in Havana. Castro is a recipient of a 2015 CIFO grant.
