Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove
On View: June 3, 2010 – July 11, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 4, 2011, 7-10 PM
Exhibit Info:
ArtCenter/ South Florida is proud to present Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove – organized by resident artist, Natasha Duwin. Many times a gentle demeanor conceals a resolute personality, and a softness in speech and manner betrays a certain severity. This exhibition explores the tensions between these two attitudes, particularly in women. One of the featured works will be Shedding the Shadows, a dress and tapestry woven out of discarded items of clothing. Seemingly useless objects are repurposed into a series of ropes, with their connotation of strength and usefulness, and they in turn are compiled into a dress that is at once revealing and protective.
Featured Artists:
Hugo Moro, David Leroi, Damian Sarno, Natasha Duwin, Venessa Monokian, Nina Surel, Adriana Carvalho, and Agustina Woodgate
The 29th Annual Museum Education and Art Technology Programs Student Exhibition is an exhibition comprised of adjudicated student artwork. Two Hundred artworks of art were selected from over 1,000 entries countywide. This artwork was inspired by the permanent as well as traveling exhibitions from seventeen museums, galleries, and outreach programs that co-partner with Miami-Dade County Public Schools. These collaborations have allowed students ranging in grade levels Kindergarten through grade 12 to experience visits to these prestigious venues. The Museum Educators of these Museum Education and Technology Programs are art teachers, who have been chosen for their ability to plan tours, develop Educational Resource Guides and Art Curriculums that align with both the permanent and traveling exhibitions. The ideas for student artwork on exhibit today were initiated at the museum sites under the direction of the Museum Educators, and completed at their school sites under the tutelage of their art teachers.

The Architecture of Drawing
Paintings and Drawings of Errol Barron FAIA and Jacob Brillhart AIA
Opening Reception: Friday, February 25, 2011 from 7-10pm
On View: February 25 to April 3, 2011
This exhibition illustrates and examines the role of hand drawing and painting in the digital age by two architects of two generations. Drawn from more than 100 sketch books used almost daily and especially during travel, the exhibition considers the tradition of drawing as both a recording device and as a tool for thinking about design. Errol Barron and Jacob Brillhart, who both teach drawing and design in their respective institutions, Tulane University and the University of Miami, believe that drawings done digitally and by hand are not mutually exclusive activities but deeply complementary ones. The joint exhibition of how observation influences design will be comprised of sketchbooks, associated paintings, design drawings and architectural models that explore the interrelationships of drawing, painting, and architecture.
Several items were generously built by Bluestone Construction and Mike Poupore for the exhibit.
