CLOSING RECEPTION Thursday, March 27 | 7-10pm
ON VIEW February 27 – March 30, 2014

O Cinema Wynwood | 90 NW 29th St, Miami, FL 33127

In her series By the Hour, Schaeffler reveals an unglamorous Miami not usually portrayed in the movies. An artist who has been exploring the theme of identity primarily through portraiture diverted her focus here to the identity of place—that of that Miami’s ’70s-era, pseudo-art-deco motels that border Biscayne Boulevard and Eighth Street. Shaeffler takes on the role of anthropologist as she rents these rooms for a 1-2 hour period at a time and finds the beauty in what is ugly, worn and tacky. “It’s almost like a blind date,” Schaeffler says. “I don’t see the motels beforehand – that’s part of the surprise. It’s two intimate hours with me, my camera and the room.”
