Cruising Miami: A Salon presented by Celeste Fraser Delgado
As part of Reading Queer Literary Festival 2014

Monday, August 25, 2014 | 7:30pm

The Cruising Miami salon will encourage a shifting series of writing and performance partnerships centered on the theme of public sex as a form of utopian longing as presented in the work of Hialeah-born queer scholar José Esteban Muñoz. These couplings will result in readings and performances presented at the close of the salon. The salon is led by local scholar and artist Celeste Fraser Delgado.

Participants will read excerpts from and discuss the ideas presented in Muñoz’s book “Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity”. Because the chapter, like much of the book, is based on work created by artists in New York City, we will discuss the potential for applying Muñoz’s ideas to the queer lifeworld of Miami and particularly Muñoz’s hometown, Hialeah. Participants will be invited to write and share their understanding of the book in the context of South Florida. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to read a chapter in advance.
