What is Felting? Very simply, felt is wool that has been matted. Wool becomes felt when it is subjected to moisture, heat, and pressure. Felted pieces can be made into functional objects like bags and hats, as well as non-functioning art, such as felt paintings, sculpture, installations and environments. The possibilities for felt are boundless. We will learn the basics of felting focusing on various methods of wet and dry felting. We will also explore simple wool-dyeing possibilities. Students will be encouraged to be experimental and bring in wild ideas and odd materials for projects. This course will provide the student with the technical knowledge needed to draw the human figure convincingly in various poses. The exercises aim to encourage seeing the figure in its totality and successfully transfer the visual information from life to paper. At the end of this class students will have an authentic style Buon Fresco art piece according to the specific rules of method and authenticity complying with the state of Tuscany law and regulations. Life during the renaissance will be discussed as well as a brief history of some of the more famous frescoes. As part of the core curriculum a short Italian Vocabulary will be introduced in order to recognize and apply the correct pronunciation and terminology of the Al fresco Steps and methods. All materials in this course are made out of natural and organic ingredients such as: powdered lapis, lazuli, turquoise, mother of pearl and copper oxides.

Since the Renaissance, artists have used self-portraits to explore a basic question: Who am I? While a mirror or a photograph can tell a person what he or she looks like, that physical image does not reflect the whole self. Self-portraiture insists the artist embark on a journey of self-exploration in order to make decisions about how to represent him/herself authentically. Self-portraits may also represent an artist’s quest for immortality, as a way to leave behind an image that will outlive the artist. Additionally, a self-portrait can preserve a memory, serve as a gift, and even help an artist further understand him/herself. This particular Self-portraiture class will help artist and beginners with easy techniques and methods to render the perfect portrait.

In this course we will learn how to build glass on glass mosaics for the purpose of illuminating them from behind. Two dimensional pictures and three dimensional sculpture will be created using a
process that imitates stained glass works. Framing, lighting and creating a freestanding armature will also be explored.

This class will explore the process of Abstraction utilizing form and movement and inspired by the works of Constantin Brancusi, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth. Students will examine the figure in motion, define line of gesture, zoom in on specific area of figure, generalize or simplify forms, make clay Maquette for model to follow. Each student will cast a plaster block.
The plaster sculpture will be complete by implementing the subtractive sculpting method of chiseling. Form and movement will be concentrated towards the dominance of the abstraction of the human figure.
Students will use straight and toothed chisels, rifflers, rasps and square hammers.
FURNITURE DESIGN: Functional Artistic Furniture Design

Lazaro Amaral - Won a three year scholarship for Art at the University of Miami while still in high school. He went on to The Parson’s School of Design, New York, and earned an A.A. Degree in 1988. Lazaro has created work for MTV, Vh1, Nickelodeon, The Miami Herald & Avanti Press.

Anthony Ardavin - was born in Guantanamo, Cuba. After earning a Bachelor degree in Psychology with a minor in Art from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, he moved to Atlanta to work at IBM Headquarters as an Art Consultant. In 1988 he opened the Anthony Ardavin Gallery in Atlanta and sold it in 2006 to move to Miami to paint full time. His work deals with nostalgia and the world of the imagination.

Jacquenette Arnette - has made it her artistic pursuit to live, work and interact in as many different areas of the world as possible. Born in San Antonio, Texas she has studied and taught in Australia and Germany and lived in Japan, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and most recently Miami Beach. Currently Jacquenette is the Director of Exhibitions at the ArtCenter of South/ Florida, and has completed residencies at both the Miami Children’s Museum and the Red Cinder Residency in Kona, Hawaii. She contnues to show all around the United States and regularly participates in residencies and cultural exchanges both in Florida and abroad.

William Dratler - Attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City and was graduated with honors in advertising. Earned a Bachelors of Science degree from New York University in teaching art and graphic design. Was affiliated with Ted Bates Advertising Agency as Vice President Art Director. Currently continues to paint and write poetry.
Armando Droulers - Armando Droulers is an artist, art historian, graphic designer and Illustrator. As an educator he has taught all of the above including animation. He studied at Bard College, Academia de Arte Federico Brandt,

Natasha Duwin was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and has since lived in New York, Tokyo and Miami. In her work, Duwin explores the ideas of female-ness and womanhood, and how to construct a strong female identity without falling into the traps of tradition and expectations. Duwin uses non-traditional materials, such as metals and organic matter, in traditionally "feminine" techniques, such as weaving and embroidery. She has shown extensively over the last couple of years, is included in several prominent collections, holds an MFA in Visual Arts from Florida International University, and is an Artist-in-Residence at ArtCenter South Florida (800 Lincoln Road, Studio 107, Miami Beach).

Monica Eichmann has a BFA in Public Art from University of Florida and New World School of the Arts and Masters Degree from Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and Istituto per il Arte e il Restauro in Florence, Italy.
She has been working for UNESCO as a registered art restorer and therapist.
She is part of the team that restored David at the Accademia ,Giambologna sculpture “The Rape of the Sabine Women” at Loggia dei Lanzi, The Bronzino frescoes at Palazzo Vecchio and the Pontormo Fresco at Santa Felicita Church.
The subject matter of her art playfully addresses how to survive in a culture where over stimulation made the word redundant look flat. With her work she proposes to go back to basics and to nature. She uses art to celebrate life and teases the viewer into unleashing the magical creative journeys that waits dormant in all of us at any age. Monica shows her work in selected galleries in Florence, Prague, Tangier, Zurich, Konstanz and Berlin.
Leslie LaCombe - Leslie LaCombe grew up in Canada and has a business degree from the University of Toronto. While excelling in business she explored the arts in her spare time and eventually left the corporate world to make beaded jewelry with a local designer. In 2004 Leslie went to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to study silver jewelry design with Billy King. Within a few months of study her work was on display at a prominent local gallery. Today Leslie lives in Miami, Florida and produces her unique creations from her studio in South Beach.
Morgan Lorenzo is a graduate of Darton College and a recipient of Stonehaus Ceramics’ 2006 summer residency. She is a public artist specializing in glass and ceramic installations for hotels, resorts and other hospitality venues. Morgan also serves as ArtCenter’s Education Coordinator and Art Studies’ glass mosaic workshop instructor.

Stephanie Rodriguez‘s work is influenced by expressionism and contemporary art. It is her vision to incorporate an abstract look using traditional mediums. Stephanie has worked with many companies from around the world including Plank Road Publishing, newWitch, Aurealis Australian Science Fiction and Artist’s and Graphic Designer’s Marketplace. She works in a variety of mediums including pen and ink, watercolor and oil paint. Gustavo Román - was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After earning a Bachelor of Humanities in Fine Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, he moved to Miami where he resides and works. He has shown in Chicago, Kansas City, and New York. Román is currently pursuing an MFA in drawing from Florida International University in Miami.
His body of work deals with the human psyche and its correlation with physical existence, a study of humanity through the figure.

Emma Trelles is an arts and culture journalist and a Pushcart Prize nominee for poetry. Her poems and essays have been published in lit anthologies and in New Millennium Writings, OCHO, Gulf Stream , Newsday, the Miami Herald and Latina magazine. Most recently she was the art critic for the Sun-Sentinel for three years and an editor for the Tigertail poetry journals and MiPOesias Magazine's American-Cuban issue. She has taught creative writing at the ArtCenter/South Florida, the Florida Center for the Literary Arts and at Florida International University , where she earned her Masters in Fine Arts. She recently published a chapbook of poems, Little Spells, with Goss 183 press.
