This course aims to develop the student's ability to render the human figure and refine drawing skills and techniques. Students will learn to use line and tone to develop an understanding of the proportions & structures of the body. A model will be present for each class. Short and long poses will be provided.

This course will provide the student with the technical knowledge needed to draw the human figure convincingly in various poses. The exercises aim to encourage seeing the figure in its totality and successfully transfer the visual information from life to paper. Upon completion of the course the student will understand the formal principles of drawing the figure from observation and should be able to draw visual queues from memory that suggest the figure’s components within it’s entirety.

This course explores the possibilities of mixed media by combining both drawing and collage. By drawing, cutting and pasting, the class will create works based on different types of textures using a variety of materials such as papers, fabrics and cardboard. Drawing materials will include pencils, charcoal, pastel and ink. Exploration will be encouraged with an emphasis on strong composition based on some of the best examples of collages in the history of art.

This course is designed for students who wish to advance their skills in painting. The class will be organized with several projects that will help students to experiment with different methods and visualize the concepts they have. It is the goal of this class to familiarize students with the art and practices of painting that they may use all these tools for their own personal vision.

FLORENTINE FRESCO PAINTING

At the end of this class students will have an authentic style Buon Fresco art piece according to the specific rules of method and authenticity complying with the state of Tuscany law and regulations. Life during the renaissance will be discussed as well as a brief history of some of the more famous frescoes. As part of the core curriculum a short Italian Vocabulary will be introduced in order to recognize and apply the correct pronunciation and terminology of the Al fresco Steps and methods. All materials in this course are made out of natural and organic ingredients such as: powdered lapis, lazuli, turquoise, mother of pearl and copper oxides.

Perfect for illustrators, fashion designers, comic book illustrators, computer animators and art students who are interested in taking the human figure to the next level. The class will develop into technical aspects of drawing and painting, such as proportion, line qualities, light, and the figure in perspective and in motion. Also the narrative aspect will be taught for those interested in story board. This class will also be great for students and artists interested in building a portfolio.

A specialized class in recreating our three dimensional world on a two dimensional canvas. Using classical techniques, students will use oil or acrylic paints to develop their still life painting skills by gaining knowledge of composition, lighting, perspective and color theory.

Digital Photography has become the standard, even for the novice. Come and learn all of the ins and outs of your handheld digital camera. Get comprehensive knowledge of your cameras gadgets and modes. Learn about image composition and the basics of digital photographic technique and file organization. In just three hours you can become more comfortable with yourself behind the camera.

Learn the basics in edititng with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

New students will learn the basic techniques of jewelry making through the completion of an assigned project. From this project student will learn metal forming, texturing, soldering, stone setting and finishing. Intermediate and advanced students can also benefit from this class by creating their own projects with the instructor's supervision. These students can learn about piercing, overlay, married metals, bench-top casting, box-making and hinges.

Please note: Additonal costs for casting will depend on each student project.
Learn the traditional art of wax carving and let your imagination take charge. This relaxing class will teach you to mold and manipulate wax pieces and then turn them into the metal of your choice through the process of casting. Through group demonstrations and individual help, only your creativity can limit the jewelry you can create in this class. No previous experience necessary.


PRINTMAKING

OPEN PRINT LAB FOR MONOPRINTING

monitor at start of each lab-no registration necessary. Akua water-based, non-toxic inks and use of the press are included- Please bring your own paper. Some supplies will be available to purchase. Monoprints are known as the most painterly method among the printmaking techniques, and are often regarded as a non-editionable kind of print, essentially printed paintings. The characteristic of this method is that no two prints are alike. The beauty of this media is also in its spontaneity and its combination of printmaking, painting and drawing mediums.

We will be experimenting with mixing mono printing and silk screen printing in this course. Using the press to produce deferment colored prints, along with silk screen printing we will create finished art pieces on paper that have as layered effects.

JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTING

The class will include an overview of traditional and contemporary Japanese printmaking. We will learn traditional registration, and the use of Japanese printmaking methods, tools, and paper. Sal Sidner studied traditional Japanese printmaking with a master printmaker in Kyoto in 2007 and has done extensive research about japanese paper and printmaking at the Asian Museum in San Francisco, and several museums and craft centers in Japan. She exhibits at various international printmaking shows.

COLLAGRAPHS/ EMBELLISHED MONOPRINTS

The class will learn how to make collographs with card, textured paint and found objects, and print with water-based highly pigmented inks on a press. You will learn how to play around with painterly techniques to produce one of a kind objects with embellished surfaces. Sal Sidner studied printmaking at the Accademia, Florence, Italy, Il Bisonte in Florence, the West of England College of Art, and the University of Miami, as well as in Japan and various print studios. Her work has been shown at the Society of Illustrators, New York, Art Basel, the University of Venice, New York University, and galleries in France, England, and the US.

FELTING AND SCULPTURAL CROCHET

During this session we will be focusing on felting and sculptural crochet. What is Felting? Very simply, felt is wool that has been matted. Wool becomes felt when it is subjected to moisture, heat, and pressure. Felted pieces can be made into functional objects like bags and hats, as well as non-functioning art, such as felt paintings, sculpture, installations and environments. The possibilities for felt are boundless. We will learn the basics of felting focusing on various methods of wet and dry felting. We will also explore simple wool-dyeing possibilities. Students will be encouraged to be experimental and bring in wild ideas and odd materials for projects. Crochet is basically a process of endless looping. Patterns and designs are made by how and when you loop. This class gives license to throw away the rules and instructions. We will be using basic crochet methods in unlikely ways to create sculptural forms. We will also explore how to make our own needles for very large “yarns”. Beginners and life-long crochet-ers encouraged to come and explore the possibilities of free-form crochet.


FELTING AND TAPESTRY

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION

The class will focus on observation from life models and still life, and is designed to augment observational drawing skills.


A painter and printmaker exhibiting internationally, Sal Sidner recently became a Miami Dade Public Schools teacher, and began an Art Club at her school focusing on Portfolio Preparation for Magnet Art Schools and Colleges. She also teaches at the Fairchild Garden Challenge.

Harumi Abe - Harumi Abe is an emerging artist who has shown her art extensively in South Florida. After moving to Miami from Japan, she received her BFA from Ai Miami International University of Art and Design and MFA at Florida International University. She is a recipient of 2008 South Florida Cultural Consortium for Visual and Media Artists and Women in the Visual Artists Scholarship.

Lazaro Amaral - Won a three year scholarship for Art at the University of Miami while still in high school. He went on to The Parson’s School of Design, New York, and earned an A.A. Degree in 1988. Lazaro has created work for MTV, Vh1, Nickelodeon, The Miami Herald & Avanti Press.

William Dratler - Attended the Parsons School of Design in New York City and was graduated with honors in advertising. Earned a Bachelors of Science degree from New York University in teaching art and graphic design. Was affiliated with Ted Bates Advertising Agency as Vice President Art Director. Currently continues to paint and write poetry.

Leslie LaCombe - Leslie LaCombe grew up in Canada and has a business degree from the University of Toronto. While excelling in business she explored the arts in her spare time and eventually left the corporate world to make beaded jewelry with a local designer. In 2004 Leslie went to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to study silver jewelry design with Billy King. Within a few months of study her work was on display at a prominent local gallery. Today Leslie lives in Miami, Florida and produces her unique creations from her studio in South Beach.

Kerry Phillips - Earned a BFA from FIU in 2000 (Florida International University) & MFA in 2003 from University of Arizona

Gustavo Román - was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico. After earning a Bachelor of Humanities in Fine Arts from the University of Puerto Rico, he moved to Miami where he resides and works. He has shown in Chicago, Kansas City, and New York. Román is currently pursuing an MFA in drawing from Florida International University in Miami. His body of work deals with the human psyche and its correlation with physical existence, a study of humanity through the figure.

Sal Sidner - Sal Sidner is a painter and printmaker who exhibits internationally. She recently became a Miami Dade Public Schools teacher, and began an Art Club at her school focusing on Portfolio Preparation for Magnet Art Schools and Colleges. She has also taught at Moca and the Fairchild Garden Challenge.
