We live surrounded by a kaleidoscope of visual patterns—from the micro to the macro-cosmos in nature to man-made environments. We exist in a world in which everything is connected. The 12 artists, architects and composers in this exhibition relate to patterns in very unique and distinctive ways: whether they extrapolate natural patterns and integrate them in their art-making processes, or play with geometrical patterns, or yet create their own patterns inspired by existing man-made landscapes or by invented systems, they all offer us the opportunity to go beyond the pure aesthetic enjoyment of the artworks featured in the galleries, and reflect upon the patterns that served as their inspirations.

Multiplicity is defined as the quality or state of being multiple or various. The artists in this exhibition do not work with the quantitative notion of the word but rather examine the multiple uses of materials and their transformative quality to take on a range of meanings and functions. Whether they are found objects, recycled trash or simple materials utilized in daily life, the artists challenge, re-use and re-invent them in the creation of sculptural pieces, paintings, installations and photographs that reveal their aesthetic qualities and reference the personal context in which they were made.

Pin Up Pop Up Poetry

Poetry Pinning: April 1-30, 2013
Poetry Reading: Wednesday, April 24, 2013 | 7pm

As part of O Miami, a biennial poetry festival, poets are invited to push-pin their poems onto the walls at the ArtCenter/South Florida at 800-810 Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. Poets and all artists can do this with original poems or poems that inspire them (proper credit given). The poems can be on any kind of paper including post-its, photographs or drawings and put up with a push pin. Poets should sign in at The Richard Shack Gallery located at 800 Lincoln Road before pinning their poems. Pin Up Pop Up Poetry will culminate with a poetry reading on Wednesday, April 24 at 7pm at The Richard Shack Gallery located at 800 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach.

Music on a Long Thin Wire | Alvin Lucier

“The wire is extended across a large room, clamped to tables at both ends. The ends of the wire are connected to the loudspeaker terminals of a power amplifier placed under one of the tables. A sine wave oscillator is connected to the amplifier. A magnet straddles the wire at one end. Wooden bridges are inserted under the wire at both ends to which contact microphones are imbedded, routed to a stereo sound system. The microphones pick up the vibrations that the wire imparts to the bridges and are sent through the playback system. By varying the frequency and loudness of the oscillator, a rich variety of slides, frequency shifts, audible beats and other sonic phenomena may be produced.”   — Alvin Lucier (1992)

The piece was recreated and adapted by members of F.L.E.A. and the installation is a project organized in collaboration with the Florida International University School of Music’s Music Technology Program and ArtCenter/South Florida.

impromptu: culture at your own pace

impromptu: is a bridge between the traditions of visual and musical art. One Wednesday evening each month from 7-9pm, New World Symphony fellows and friends perform in the ArtCenter’s Richard Shack Gallery. Unlike a conventional concert, you won’t need a ticket, you can arrive at any time, sit or stand anywhere you like, and stay for 5 minutes or all night.

Extended as part of Subtropics: Miami’s Biennial of Music and Sound Art

Project 924 | 924 Lincoln Road, Second Floor, Miami Beach, 33139

Artist Wes Kline has recreated the unproduced film “Minotaur” by the mid-century avant garde filmmaker Hans Richter, by using Project 924 as a collage space for re-imagining the film as a series of performative vignettes and architectural photographic archives strewn around the gallery. Kline produced a series of structures, video vignettes, photographs, archives, drawings, and performances that collapse the modernist figure of the “Minotaur” (a favorite of the Surrealists, Picasso, and many others) into a series of participatory moments. Instead of the fragmented figure of the Minotaur in a labyrinth, the viewer encounters an opportunity to “repair,” “archive,” or “restructure” the Minotaur as a site of exchange and production. The title MINOTAUROCRACY humorously alludes to this ‘production,’ recalling the image of the Minotaur as not a fragment, but as a plurality.
