Using imagery from film, Jessica Martin’s paintings capture interludes between movements and merge states of dimensionality and flatness by conveying the layering and compression of time. The compositions are influenced by elements of geometry in naturally occurring forms, including radial symmetry and the manifestation of these geometries in performance, rituals, and dance. Referencing forms in choreography, the compositions are juxtaposed between naturally existing synchronized movements and highly staged ensembles. Built up through layers of paint, the paintings are highly worked, creating new narratives for the figures and landscapes that are lurking behind the swiftness and bursting, softness and aggression of Martin’s mark-making.
