Invisible Solid: Miami

Hisae Ikenaga

ON VIEW  December 21, 2013 – February 9, 2014

Windows @ Walgreens | 100 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139

Hisae Ikenaga works with everyday objects that she alters to present different meanings and uses to said objects. In Invisible Solid: Miami, Ikenaga presents four installations developed during her Visiting Artist residency at ArtCenter/South Florida in partnership with Acción Cultural Española. These installations are an amalgamation of her more formal sculptures where she recontextualizes domestic objects as non-functional works of art and her site-specific installation work with found objects. Irony and absurdity are key elements of Ikenaga’s works.

In MacArthur Causeway, Ikenaga assembled found objects that washed up from Biscayne Bay under the MacArthur Causeway. In Sun Bathing and The Last Glass of Wine, she speaks to the opulence and tourism found in South Beach as well as kitsch often present in both by staging absurd scenes. In With a Noose Around Your Neck, Ikenaga presents a combination of large sourced and found objects that present a juxtaposition of the rough and the delicate. Set in ArtCenter’s Windows @ Walgreens, an exhibition venue attached to a well-recognized store, the installation questions both consumerism and what the viewer perceives as art.

Hisae Ikenaga
Mexico, 1977 | Lives and works in Madrid, Spain

Half-Mexican and half-Japanese, Hisae Ikenaga, presents processed industrial made objects to create contradictions in their functions. She has a constant will of transformation to point out the processes in the materials. In some of her works, she proposes the use of  “global objects,” objects purchased in international chain stores, to manipulate, arrange their parts in different ways and create new opinions about everyday life circumstances. The instruction manuals of these objects are also used to open new windows to see transformations on paper. Ikenaga studied Fine Arts in Mexico City and completed postgraduate studies in Kyoto, Barcelona and Madrid. She has exhibited works in Cuba, Germany, Japan, México, Spain, UK, France and US, among others.
