PlushSpace by Laura Marsh
On View: July 1 – September 17, 2017
Opening Reception: July 5, 2017 | 7-10 pm
Location: ArtCenter/South Florida | 924 Lincoln Road, Vitrine, Miami Beach

In PlushSpace Laura Marsh reacts to a narrow corridor by activating the vitrine as a participatory site for passage. The experience of walking in a glass enclosure measuring 40 feet long and 2 feet wide makes one aware of one’s own verticality. PlushSpace layers the space with 50 flags spelling out an unfolding narrative above, aquatic lighting bouncing off glass, and 100 fabric balls to interact with at your feet. Flags bear text and symbols that speak about artist and curator roles, fem symbolism, and national identities. Rosie the Riveter is a reappearing image who speaks to the changing roles of women in the American workplace. Laura Marsh references the cultural icon as a narrative device to address being working class and navigating art communities.  As an installation artist with a tactile sensibility and curatorial practice, she produces environments that are approachable and inclusive. Her investment in viewer participation and material dialogue is a statement that the tactile is conceptually layered and relational. PlushSpace is an immersive installation and incubator for viewers to engage with sewn forms, reinterpret space, and discuss issues within the arts while being active participants.

Laura Marsh has exhibited at venues including Printed Matter, Field Projects, Newman Popiashvili Gallery, and Tilton Gallery in NY.  She has attended residencies including Zona Imaginaria in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the China Project through Tilton Gallery in Beijing, China. Marsh is an artist curator, and she supports contemporary installation and social practice in both her own studio as well as fellow artists. Her long-term goal is to produce global projects, traveling exhibitions, and to build a team of fellow installation artists who produce abroad. Marsh received her MFA in Sculpture from Yale University School of Art, CT and her BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, OH. She is the current Curator of Exhibitions at the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood and Artist in Residence at the ArtCenter/South Florida.
