While Watching T.V. includes painted magazines in the context of a corporate storefront window transforming  them into advertisements for painting; highlighting mass production, the market, and concurrently denying visitors the access to the same personal viewing space in which the paintings were created. In this context the personal space becomes public and poetics become commodity.

Valella begins each work with the simple idea of choosing a color and placing it on a surface – the question then becomes where on the surface to place it. This process of repeatedly placing marks may determine the structure or the use of a ready-made grid, such as the one found in a  magazine.  The contours of the letters can be used as graphic space. For Valella, this process documents the labor and delineates the  space where painting can take place. With no inclination of where to place which color, what remains is a series of actions marked upon a graphic ground. Meaning may be applied freely between the object and its story and thus provides a possible exit from traditional notions of painting for the viewer.

Marcos Valella (b 1981, Miami) received a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA and a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Visual Arts from Florida International University, Miami, FL. He is the recipient of Here and There Grant, Bass Museum of Art and Mildred Pelzer Lynch Fellowship. Marcos Valella’s work is included in numerous public and private collections.
