Hye Weon Shim sees this work as a poetic representation of freedom. The feathered boat is white, an infinite and simultaneously empty color. It can be filled with hopes, dreams and inspirations. This canoe can be seen as the vessel for the journey between birth and death. Inspired by Confucianism and Buddhism, her artistic practice of cutting and sculpting brings a sense of peace and tranquility for a meditative state of mind. A famous Confucius quote states “1000 repetitions answers all questions.” Shim’s sculpture is paired with a print of another boat created out of leaves in the same meditative and repetitive process, set in nature.

low frequency ceiling

low frequency ceiling is a site specific installation consisting of fabric collages, sculpture, prints and photography that recounts aspects of growth through a socioeconomic and biological lens. The work proposes a dialogue between two seemingly divergent observations: on the one hand the relationship between geographic location and socioeconomic class and on the other the way in which the evolution of microscopic organisms mirror external change. In order to reconcile these viewpoints, the installation relies on architecture as a symbol and representation of impermanence. For example, a series of monoprints depicts an alternate history of Miami and illustrates what it might have been had it been left untouched, while the effects of scale and pattern are used throughout the work to highlight externalities within cycles of development.
