The Bruce High Quality Foundation University (BHQFU) is proud to present, in collaboration with ArtCenter/South Florida, a group exhibition featuring resident artists from the MFU: New York Studio & Teaching Program. Curated by Victoria Seacrest, the interdisciplinary show includes works created by the artists while in-residence at BHQFU’s headquarters in Brooklyn, NY. “Parafiction” is loosely defined by art historian Carrie Lambert-Beatty as an emergent genre of artwork that plays in the overlap between fact and fiction. Behrle, Chun, Ikegami, Lumumba, and Ross each interprets “parafiction” through their individual lenses of lived experience, personal critical frameworks, and studio practices. In a climate of “alternative facts” and “post-truths,” their recent works have all either directly or indirectly synthesized today’s politics into engagements with data interpretation, unreliable narration, mistranslation, historical revisionism, and speculations about future identities and intimacy. Or maybe they don’t.
The opening reception will feature live performances by MFU: MIAMI Fellows Zain Alam and Juan Ledesma.
